John Fitch Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award Safety pioneer also honored by state of Connecticut
In conjunction, the governor of the state of Connecticut proclaimed April 21, 2006 as "John Cooper Fitch Day". Governer M. Jodi Rell said, "This award celebrates your many contributions to automotive safety, which have helped save the lives of others." With a varied career as a blue-water sailor, WWII fighter pilot, test pilot, professional racing driver, team manager, race course director, prolific inventor, highway safety expert, automaker, entrepreneur and dreamer, John Fitch has packed an amazing range of experiences into one life. As a racer, Fitch drove for the Mercedes factory team and was behind the wheel in Jaguars, Cunninghams, Corvettes and a host of other marques. During the latter part of his racing career he entered the field of highway safety by designing, developing and successfully testing the Fitch Barrier. This is the sand-filled plastic-barrel crash cushion that is commonly seen in front of bridge abutments. Used throughout the United States and the world, "The Fitch Barrier" is credited with saving thousands of lives. Fitch is the only person in the highway safety field who personally crashed-tested barriers of his own design.
