Briggs Cunningham Honored in New Web Site New web site dedicated to telling the story of a great American sportsman
Cunningham, who died on July 2, 2003, was a well-known American sportsman who so loved the sport of motor racing that he built a team around cars of his own design and construction, with the overriding goal of achieving an all-American victory at the classic 24 Hours of Le Mans, France. Cunningham and his drivers entered over 680 races in a competition career that started in 1940 and lasted until 1966. One of Team Cunninghams most notable achievements was placing third, seventh and tenth in the 1953 Le Mans, at a time when American-built sports cars were not yet considered to be competitive against more established European marques. Briggs was also a master yacht racer, leading an American consortium to successfully defend the 1958 Americas Cup at the helm of Columbia. John Fitch, who raced in Cunningham cars throughout the 1950s, said I had many races and many adventures with Briggs and his cars. I think this web site really tells the story of his passion for racing and competition. I'm proud to be part of this effort.
